Haines and Chilkat River, Alaska Thursday, November 19, 2009 Well, no snow today. In fact, there was partial clearing, which, of course, meant that the temperature dropped today. The high today was 22 F, but the wind was blowing in many areas, so with the wind chill factor it felt like 3 F. It was blowing in Haines, but fortunately, there less wind out at the Chilkat Eagle Preserve. This was another one of those days where the eagles were in abundance up in the trees, but none seemed very hungry and they just sat up there. After a few hours waiting for something interesting to happen, we split up into two groups. Half of our group headed north to look for scenic landscapes and my half headed south to spend some time photographing little waterfalls along the road that we had spotted on the way out to the preserve. On our way, we spotted a couple of eagles feeding on the banks of the river near the roadside, so we stopped and spent an hour or so photographing there. By the time we were done with the waterfalls and the eagles, it was after 2 pm and the sun would soon be setting, therefore we cancelled our original plan to meet back up with the other group. We headed back to Haines and individually spent some time working up some of the images we’ve been capturing. We will be back to our standing 5:30 pm dinner reservation at the Bamboo Room tonight and then it will be more socializing and photo work. Tomorrow will be our last day for photography of the eagles and the Chilkat River locations and we will have a final photo critique session in the evening. Saturday morning will be spent close to Haines since we need to check in for the ferry back to Juneau about noon. Saturday night will be spent in Juneau and then it is back home on Sunday.
